A Yesteryear Analogy for Today’s Social Networks

Twitter: You stand on a soapbox and hand out an assortment of different fliers to every passerby, in order to raise awareness for your cause. Some people pass the fliers along. Most ignore you, especially if your fliers have a ton of meaningless keywords.

Facebook: You host a private party with your friends and family to raise awareness for your cause. Sometimes, people pretend to be your friend and crash your party. Sometimes, the venue renter randomly changes decor or microphone settings on you, and clutters your venue with unnecessary fluff.

Google+: You write an article in an interest magazine to raise awareness for your cause, then solicit readers’ comments. You publish these comments in next week’s issue.
